Scream has been a cult horror movie for all I've ever remembered. With the Ghostface's mask, and the knife, and the black robe. I've seen it around for a lot of times and that got me intrigued but I was never got a chance, or a push to look deeper about it. Until Scre4m (or Scream 4) comes out and the cast was all hot young teenagers from this era.
It's a story about a mass murderer on the loose, hunting the young and hip teenagers of the time. This is a movie where pretty beautiful people meets blood, alongside with the less-pretty-looking-with-the-funny-or-comical-personalities, the loved ones, the annoying-but-can't-get-rid-of characters and several other characters. It's been a year since the death of Sidney Presscot's (Neve Campbell) mother, and local murders of teenagers are occurring. Alongside her friends and boyfriend, a local news reporter Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), and Deputy Sherrif Dewey (David Arquette) she thrives to know the mystery behind the murders. That is, while the killer is on the loose, killing the people around her in the haunt of herself.
Let's be honest, let's call this movie as what it is. It's a big cliché, combined with 'whodunit' elements. It's one of my cult horror favorite, it's not tacky, it's not cheap, it gives a sense of exciting thrill. It keeps me want to dig even deeper, keep me guessing, making me ask "Who done it?" over and over again in the sense of doubting my own guesses. It gives excitement to me, rather than horror. I love it. And what I also love is the hip 90s setting and how this movie is so timeless even though heavy in its era's atmosphere. I would call this movie, 'Scooby Doo with blood and gore' it reminds me about watching Scooby Doo every now and then when I was young. It's brilliant. I can't wait to collect the continuation of the movie series.
