It's not a new thing anymore. A love story, sets in somewhere in a city, involving strings of connection between characters. We have Valentine's Day (2010), He's Just Not That Into You (2009), and other similar examples. Besides the intriguing title and the fact that the story's set in New York, Happythankyoupleasemore presents us with a set of unique elements that adds up perfectly in the movie.
What strikes me the most after watching the movie is the essence of New York. We can almost see it everywhere. Let's start with the visuals. This movie brings nothing new to the technical effects of the visuals, but it brings us to places that are very... New York. From a messy apartment to the subway, then to a downtown pub, restaurants, to a fine dining place. Offices, homes, stores, it brings every bits of pieces of New York to the movie, and I'm not even talking about the statue of Liberty yet! Honestly, I LOVE New York, and this commentary of the visuals may get a little personal due to my affection to New York. But it just fits with the whole movie.
other things that stand out from this movie are the ensemble of the characters and the casts. Let's just be honest. The casts presented are not Barbies and Kens. it's not that they're ugly-because they're not, it's just that they're all beautiful, not only because of their face structures but because they are real people. Real. People. New Yorkers. The characters are all normal people, leading on their normal lives, and some may struck us with their eccentric-ness. Everyone have their own problems, but they handle it with such different manners. Some are with their quirkiness, their wit, their own-way, their sharpness and some with their naivety. Their performances overall are good. It's not bad, but nothing's really special here. however, it's still convincing and honest.
The plot and script overall are just Ok. the story's a little bit predictable, even though every problem is resolved in different and unique way, another strong point. What's a little comical and surprising is the presence of the little kid in the beginning until the near end of the movie. The script is not bad, but again not great. It's more of how the cast says it that matters more to me in this movie, rather than what they're actually saying. The music again, brings an edge to the New York scene they got going on here but not one music or song moves me to the point where I want to look deeper to the band or the song. Even though it supports the movie and the scene, maybe a better mix would do. Enjoyable, but forgettable.
The main character is actually someone who plays someone in the TV series How I Met Your Mother, Josh Radnor. I haven't got the time to get my hands on the series, I haven't ever watched it in my whole life. But after this movie and his directorial, I'm intrigued. Overall, this is not a bad movie. It's actually a good movie due to its strong New York element and the characters of the movie. Watch this to get a long with a glimpse of a piece of the American scene.
