"Women will love this, and men won't mind the eye candy either, so it looks like this Screen Gems release can't help becoming a hit." - Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter
Cher's performance is honestly quite good. I don't really think it's as bad as people said. Christina's, however, is still new to acting and her nervousness and the newbie-feel is felt so strongly in the entire movie. But when she sings, when they sing, and dance, acting doesn't seems to be important anymore. Cam Gigandet seems to be enjoying his that-main-character's-boyfriend for too long now. He played 'the boyfriend' roles in several movies such as The Unborn (2009) as Odette Yustman's character's boyfriend, Easy A (2010) as Amanda Bynes' character's boyfriend, and The Roommate (2011) as Minka Kelly's character's boyfriend after Burlesque. Stanley Tucci is amazing as ever, same goes for Kristen Bell (who I miss os much, I love her in Veronica Mars). Diana Dianna Agron is of course amazing, even though only casted as a cameo while Peter Gallagher and Eric Dane's small roles are also ok. Overall, the acting's not that good but who cares?
"Burlesque is what happens when an irresistible sex object like Aguilera meets Cher's immovable upper lip. It isn't always pretty but on occasion it's guiltily pleasurable." - Steve Persall, St. Petersburg Time
You know, the story is recycled. It's pretty much similar to 2008 movie Make It Happen starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead. A small town girl, trying to make it happen in the big city, but there's challenges and also romance along the way. Typical. But the visuals, the clothes, the performances, the songs, it's a totally on a different level, 100 times higher and flashier. The lack of story is there, yes, however I don't really care because the theatricality leave me in awe, wanting more. Burlesque got the hottest girls in minimum and sexxed up clothing which is still fashionable. Every girl would love it for it's dazzling sparks and guys would love it because of the girls, singing and dancing, showing too many skins, and hints erotica all night long. Gotta love it.
